Dear Parents,
When we work as a team in a cooperative spirit students can realize their full potential and excel to great heights.  Modeling that we value education and the socialization aspect involved in such a public forum is essential to growth in these areas.  Showing each other respect and support speaks volumes to students. It demonstrates that we care about them and their learning.  To further enhance development, students must accept responsibility as contributing members of the educational process.  Learning is not a passive activity. Attitude and effort are key to success.  Attendance and completion of assignments is vital.
Any time your child misses school or loses an assignment help them catch up.  One way to do this is by utilizing the eduplace website.  This is the official site of our adopted math curriculum so additional assignments can be printed for homework, extra practice, or enrichment. Students can test on multiplication & division with mathmagician. Spelling and vocabulary lists can be obtained and practiced online at spellingcity. There are several excellent language and math games available on ezschool site. Other useful educational sites allow additional online practice and provide printable worksheets.  Your child's grades will be posted on edustar.  You can access these online once you have set up an account through the administration office.  Again realize that grades are not entered on a daily basis but rather as time allows.
There are many things you can do at home to help your child be more successful at school.  Providing a time and place for homework as well as discussing what is being learned are only a few strategies.  All fourth graders should bring their planner to and from home daily.  Students record homework assignments, current reading book (AR) and page number, reminders, notices, and sometimes behavior reports.  It is the student's responsibility to keep up with this practice and obtain your initials each day.  It is also the student's responsibility to show any messages placed in planner to the appropriate adult for response.  Homework is meant to allow students the opportunity for independent practice of skills taught in class.  It should take less than an hour to complete (including the 20 min. reading time). Students share their work and discuss how they solved their problems the following day.  Often this is not graded but still an important aspect of learning .  Check out my links to see other suggestions for practice both at home and on the road.  Behavior issues are usually dealt with in class.  We have several built in systems (tickets/gratitude stones/peace days) in addition to the office referral forms.  I will only contact you when necessary.
Q&A, classroom policy, and parent note sections may help answer any questions you may have. Please refer to these resources first. If you still need to contact me, feel free to use the email or phone number listed above.  I'll try to get back to you as quickly as possible.  Bare in mind, I have limited time during the school day.  In addition I have a life and family of my own.  There may be days when I am absent or do not have an opportunity to check messages.  I hope you understand and will be patient with me.  Trust that I want only to help every child succeed.
