INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL SAAC MINUTES
October 14, 2009

The meeting was called to order at 4:05PM. In attendance were Sabra Miller, Tracy Schenk and Marcy Mitchell.
September minutes were amended to omit the third line of the last paragraph – “Both committees are an extension of the school board.” September minutes were then approved.
Old Business – parent/teacher conferences held in the evening from 4-8 seemed to go well. The Connect Ed message that was given after the first night appeared to have bumped attendance since there was a much larger crowd on Wednesday than on Monday.
New Business – Discussion of 4 day school week. SAAC was asked to look at how a 4-day school week would affect extracurricular activities.
It was agreed by committee members that the Town’s Park and Rec. programs would have to be bumped back by an hour, which would impact certain sports that play two games in one evening, such as soccer and basketball. The 2nd game would run too late in the evening and it would cancel the ability for these sports to hold the 2nd game. In addition, other activities, such as Music Boosters, 4H programs, Rotary, etc.. might also be adversely affected by the extended day.
The committee said the primary investigation, however, should center on how a 4-day school week will affect learning. Questions were raised such as:
  • Will student retention after a 3-day weekend be better or worse than a 2-day weekend?
  • How will the student’s attention spans be affected with 10 minute longer classes?
  • Will the students react positively or negatively to a longer school day in terms of productivity?
  • Will teachers be able to get through the same amount of curriculum with 10 extra minutes tacked on to each day compared to a 30 minute class on Friday?
  • What about tests that are given on Fridays?
SAAC recommended studying how performance was affected at other schools that have a 4-day school week and looking at their test scores, grades, attendance, etc… in comparison to when they had a 5-day school week. In addition, Tracy Schenk said she would send an Email to all other Intermediate School teachers to get their feedback on the subject.
Pending Business: SAAC members may still get to do the 7 Habits Training. Details are still being determined.
Meeting adjourned at 4:45PM.
