The mission of Archuleta School District is to empower students to achieve personal and academic successes in a safe and appropriate learning environment while providing them with the tools to effectively navigate the 21st century.
We have the best staff and curricular programming in place to accomplish this. However, the same cannot be said for our facilities. We recognize that appropriate educational facilities contribute to the education and well-being of our children. Studies show that proper lighting, air quality, temperature, and acoustics all contribute to a better quality education, increasing achievement and teacher effectiveness while highway access and noise are detrimental. Additionally, safety of our students is of primary concern. Being located on a major highway poses challenges and risks to include traffic congestion, limited parking areas, limited drop-off and pick-up points for parents, danger to students crossing the highway to attend school and PE classes, and difficulties in providing the best possible security in lock-down situations.
Furthermore, to access our meeting point in case of fire drills/evacuation we must have students crossing Highway 160. Finally, the Colorado Department of Education has indicated that many of our systems and structures have extended beyond their service life. Heating systems, roofs, and even concrete walls simply aren't designed to last forever.
The Board of Education feels that it is time to put a ballot question to the community to provide the facilities our children need to be educated in a fast-paced, and increasingly competitive world.
